REED BEDS-WHAT ARE THEY?

Well apart from being one of mans’ oldest forms of water purification, it very much depends upon their purpose. They can be solely a biodiversity area for the benefit of fauna and flora; these are usually on a grand scale as wetlands for bird habitat. They can be a wetland for flood control and land stabilisation, which includes a carbon sink, in both river basins and tidal marshes.

More normally they are for the treatment of sewage and septic tank effluent and treatment of farm effluent from the beef or diary cattle sheds, the piggery, sheep sheds, silage bays and stables.

In order to meet government targets they are becoming a viable component of SUDS, sustainable urban drainage system, for new developments of retail and housing. They are a very important component of Anaerobic Digesters that produce cheap electricity, and they can be successfully part of Raingardens that help control localised flooding.

But for all their uses, and shapes, and length of time in use on the planet, there are three essential elements that are needed to work symbiotically for the reed bed to achieve the results it was designed for. The three elements are plants bacteria and water.

WHAT DO THEY DO?

To put it simply they clean polluted water or liquids to an acceptable standard required for the application in order to meet environmental standards. In some cases they deliver drinking water quality, mostly, 95% of cases, they protect the environment from harmful discharges. But a word of caution, they do have limitations and some pollutant clean up projects can’t be solved with the reed bed solution.
